Dentistry
Dental care is vital to the overall health of any pet. Dental disease can lead to health issues with the heart, liver, and kidneys, and can affect the entire body through the bloodstream. In fact, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years of age suffer from some form of dental disease, making it the most common pet health issue among our pet population.
The most effective way to protect your pet from dental disease is through professional cleanings. We perform thorough cleanings here New Prairie Small Animal Clinic.
What is involved with a routine dental cleaning?
A routine dental cleaning at New Prairie Small Animal Clinic involves a thorough dental examination, followed by scaling and polishing to remove the plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. Our doctors will perform pre- anesthetic blood tests to ensure that organ function and blood cell counts are satisfactory for anesthesia. Sometimes antibiotic treatment is started before the periodontal therapy is performed. Our doctors and registered technicians will discuss the specific recommendations for your pet.
Once your dog is anesthetized, both our doctors and registered technicians will thoroughly examine his or her mouth, noting the alignment of the teeth and the extent of tartar accumulation both above and below the gum line. If periodontal disease is severe, it may not be possible to save the affected teeth. Depending on the affected tooth, extraction may be the only option. Next, tooth scaling will be performed using both traditional hand scalers and ultrasonic cleaning equipment to remove all traces of tartar, both above and below the gum line.
After scaling, the teeth are polished to remove microscopic scratches that occur during scaling. A smooth surface on the tooth is essential to prevent plaque from easily sticking to the tooth’s enamel. Special applications such as fluoride, antibiotic preparations, and cleaning compounds may be indicated to decrease tooth sensitivity, strengthen enamel, treat bacterial infection, and reduce future plaque accumulation.

It has been proven that cells communicate through coherent light. Coherent light does not radiate but rather is directed to a specific location. Cells in the living matrix also communicate throughout the total body via coherent light. That communication is done instantaneously through the living matrix to direct all aspects of healing, growth, regulation and metabolism and general cell survival. The cold laser is able to emulate the exact methodology that the cells use to heal themselves and also grow, to change and survive.
